“Knock, knock,” I heard in loud, cheery voice. “Got a sec?” Vivienne asked. That was funny. I had a lot of fucking seconds. All she was interrupting was me staring aimlessly out the window for the hundredth time today.

“You bet,” I said, spinning my chair around to see her.

“Don’t get up. I won’t be long,” she said, holding her hand out to me. “I’ve got a ton of work to do, but I wanted to ask you before I forgot again. We are having a big supper at our place tomorrow night. Can you and Chelsea make it?” she asked, hands clasped together.

“Uh, no, sorry. Maybe next time?”

“Do ya maybe wanna call the girl before answering for her again? Don’t need to get in trouble like last time, right?” She giggled.

“I’ve called. I’ve gone over there. She won’t see me or talk to me,” I said against my steepled hands.

“What did you do this time?” she said as her face transformed from gleeful to suspicious.

Sighing, I told her, “We had a fight. She left.”

“Can you expand on that, Mr. Man of Few Words? First things first,” she said, walking carefully to the closest chair. “Sit.”

“Really, there’s nothing to…”

“Sit,” she said, pointing her finger at the chair opposite hers, huffing from the effort of walking the short distance.

Rolling my eyes, I followed her, sinking down into the seat. I gave her the short, less painful version of what transpired. For what it was worth, it still killed.

Instead of giving me a lecture, she sat there, looking me up and down. A few times her mouth opened like she was going to say something, then she’d quickly close it.

Lifting her hair up, fluffing it a bit, she finally spoke, “You…you still have his room?” Her eyes filled with moisture.

“Yeah.”

“That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard in my life,” she said, her voice hitching, hand going straight to her chest.

“Had a lot of sad things happen. You know that.”

“All at once, with nobody to help you out,” she said, her chin starting to quiver.

“Whaddya mean, woman? You checked in on me for weeks making sure I was fine,” I reminded her because she had. Those first few days were still a blur. Except I do remember Vivienne was always right by my side.

“Yeah, but I never helped you process or pack stuff away.” She sniffed.

“It’s all good, sweetheart. You did exactly what I needed you to do at the time.”

“No, I’m a sucky friend. Look how you took care of me when Jason and I had our…issues,” she said, a serious expression on her face.

Issues, yeah. Like when Wonder Boy wasn’t sure he could handle all the responsibilities that came with Vivienne. Issues, my ass.

“Come over for supper. You’ll be surrounded by friends who love you.” She reached over the arm of the chair to grab my hand.

“Not in the mood. Can I take a rain check?” I asked, letting her down gently.

“Of course. If you change your mind, you know where we are.
